Al Masmak Fortress

Saudi Arabia

Places

A symbol of Saudi heritage, Al Masmak Fortress is a 19th-century clay and mudbrick citadel located in the heart of Riyadh. Built in 1865, it played a pivotal role in the capture of Riyadh in 1902 by King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud, marking the beginning of the unification of Saudi Arabia. Its robust Najdi architectural style, featuring crenellated towers and thick walls, epitomizes traditional desert fortifications.
